Days of Past

In 1965, my brother Charlie married Gayle. It not only united these two people, but two families were joined. The Babcock family was my second home. Jill was my best friend and sister I never had. Jerry joined the forces becoming brother number four. I have so many memories of our youth together that I could write a novel; instead I want to share a little secret about Jerry that always puts a smile on my face.

The Babcock’s enjoyed camping, and being good natured, Jill and Jerry could each bring a friend. I went on countless weekend camping trips, but this was one that clearly stands out as an un-forgettable trip. I was totally taken by surprise when Jerry did the “ultimate heroic brotherly thing”. Instead of his usual friend; his guest on this trip turned out to be “Jill’s boyfriend”. At the grand age of 16, Jerry giving Jill a “dream camping trip” was just about the coolest thing a brother could do, and of course, the icing on the cake! “Mom and Dad were clueless”.

As time marches on we all moved to different parts of the globe. Visits became less frequent, but phone calls and e-mail helped close the gap. I didn’t see much of Jerry in our adult years, but being part of this family, his sister always let me know the latest events.

I lost a brother when I was 27, and now I have lost another one. My prayers are with you always.

My memories will live on forever: Joan Anberg
